Information about the Gray-Crowned Crane:
The Gray-Crowned Crane is is a bird in the crane family Gruidae. It occurs in dry savannah in Africa south of the Sahara, although it nests in somewhat wetter habitats. They can also be found in marshes, cultivated lands and grassy flatlands near rivers and lakes in eastern from the Uganda and Kenya, south to South Africa. This animal does not migrate. There are two subspecies. These beautiful birds are about 3.3 feet tall (1 m) and weigh about 7.y pounds (3.5 kg) they have an average wingspan of 6.5 feet (2.2 m) They are omnivores, eating plants, seeds, grain, insects, frogs, worms, snakes, small fish and the eggs of aquatic animals. They will occasionally gather near antelopes and other grazing mammals catching prey stirred up by them. Due to habitat loss they are now considered endangered.

Artist’s notes:
The Gray-Crowned Crane illustration was completed on 12.29.2013. This is the second to the last image that will go into a collage of some of the species of the world’s cranes. I have a Flickr friend who is very good at catching excellent photos of the various animals that live at the zoo she works at (her name is Amanda Marie – you can see her Flickr Photostream here .
