Information about the Jaguarundi:
The Jaguarundi – also called the Eyra Cat – is a smaller-sized member of the feline family native to a variety of habitats from Mexico, through much of Central America and most of South America. It can be found in rainforest, lowland brush areas and grasslands, usually not far from running water. In generally the cat has a total length (not including tail) of 21-30 inches (53 to 77 cm) with a tail of about 12 to 24 inches (31 to 60 cm) An adult Jaguarundi usually weighs in at about 7.7 to 20 punds (3.5 to 9.1 kg.) They are not usually much larger than a house cat. The cat’s coat can be either a red-orange or charcoal gray – these were once thought to represent two different species, but it is now considered to be one. Despite habitat loss and hunting, these cats are not considered endangered and in fact there is some belief that the animal is expanding it’s range further into North America.

Artist’s notes:
The Jaguarundi was completed on 1.16.2012. It was with some odd sense of disappointed I completed this drawings – the Jaguarundi is the last native and extant species of cat in North America I will draw (looking towards South America, I do see a number of species of felines I’ve yet to draw.) I wasn’t such which color of Jaguarundi I wanted to draw, but then decided the red coat would make a much more striking drawing than the charcoal grey.

Information about the Margay:
The Margay is a smaller member of the feline family. It is native to southern North America, down through much of Central America and most of South America. Like many other species of cat, the Margay is a solitary hunter. It prefers remote sections of very dense tropical and subtropical rainforests and cloudforests. It looks similar to the Ocelot, but the head is a little smaller with longer legs and tail. The cat weighs from 5.7 to 8.8 pounds (2.6 to 4 kilograms), with a body length of 19 to 31 inches (48 to 79 centimeters), and a tail length of 13 to 20 in (33 to 51 centimeters.) Because of unregulated hunting and habitat loss this cat is considered endangered by some environmental groups.
