Artist’s notes:
The Spicebush Swallowtail Butterfly was completed on 1.20.2013. This marks the LAST of the state butterflies I will be drawing for the 50 State Project (all official animals of the states in the USA.) I’ve developed something of a cheat in this process, whereas all black areas are filled in using existing stippling – so when an animal is primarily black (and little to no texture) most of it can be added digitally. The drawing is based on a photo by Vick DeLoach.
