Information about the Eight-Spotted Skimmer Dragonfly:
The Eight-Spotted Skimmer Dragonfly is native to the western parts of North America, from Canada down to northern Mexico. This member of the Libellulidae family can be found in lakes, ponds, marshes sloughs, slow moving streams and wetlands. While the larvae of this insect feed on mosquito and other insect larvae, along with freshwater shrimp and tadpoles, adults will feed on nearly any soft-bodied flying insect including mosquitoes, flies, small moths, mayflies, and flying ants or termites.

Artist’s notes:
The Eight-Spotted Skimmer Dragonfly was completed on 2.10.2011. Dragonflies are a favorite subject, and the details in the wings are both challenging and fun to draw. The structure of them is amazing, and I’m probably not the first person to liken them to a pane of stained glass. The drawing is based on a photo by Ron Wolf.
