The Granite Night Lizard is native to the rocky canyons and desert hillsides and in semiarid regions of Southern California and into Baja, Mexico. True to it’s name the lizard comes out of its hiding place after nightfall to hunt. Although it can be active during the day too. This is a hard animal to spot, because it it very wary and cautious, and will flee immediately when it senses danger. This reptile is more active in the spring through fall and occasionally on the warmer days of winter. The Granite Night Lizard grows to about 4-5 5/8 inches (10-14.3 cm) long and feeds on small invertebrates and insects. It has no eyelids.

Artist’s notes:
The Granite Night Lizard was completed on 3.8.11. Some time ago, I read about an endangered night lizard, and since then I wanted to draw one. Something about their large, luminous eyes really drew me to this reptile. I might draw a few more in the future. The illustration is based on a photo by Jack Goldfarb.
