Information about the Japanese Snow Monkeys or Macaque:
The Japanese Snow Monkey or Japanese Macaque is a species of Old World Monkey native to various environments of three islands in Japan: Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. These monkeys are very unusual because they are the only non-human primate that can live in a cold climate. It’s also the northern most primate with all other species living near the equator. lives in a variety of habitats. It inhabits subtropical forests in the southern part of its range and subarctic forests in mountainous areas in the northern part of its range. They are omnivorous, feeding on plants, insects nuts and fruits.

Artist’s notes:
The Japanese Snow Monkeys were completed on November 28th, 2015. I recall growing up in Minnesota the exhibit with the Snow Monkey’s would always be the first thing you’d see when you’d visit the zoo in Apple Valley. I recently decided to create a collage of various animals native to Japan, and knew I had to include this species of macaque.
