The Mexican Beaded Lizard is, along with the gila monster, is one of only two venomous lizards in the world. But the Beaded Lizard is larger and not as colorful as it’s more northern relative. The Beaded Lizard is a specialized predator feeding primarily on bird and reptile eggs, which makes exact function of the lizard’s venom uncertain and the subject of some debate. It is not aggressive and poses little threat to human. Generally these reptiles grow to about 24 inches long.

Artist’s notes:
The Mexican Beaded Lizard drawing was completed in 2008. It is based on a photo by Michael Kern. The drawing was casually requested by a member of the IRCF, and I was hoping at some point it would be used in their materials, but so far nothing has been worked out. Regardless, it was a fun drawing to create and it have proved to be a popular image.
