The Miniature Dachshund is a breed of dog that has been developed based on the larger standard Dachshund. Generally they weigh about 8-11 pounds with a height of 5-8 inches at the shoulder. They are also called “wiener dogs” for the obvious resemblance. The name “Dachshund” comes from the German word for “badger” (dachs) and “dog” (hund.) They are believed to have been developed in Germany in the 16th century, and their design and shape make it possible for them them descend into burrows and tunnels to kill badgers and other pests that dig holes. But they are also excellent hunting dogs for above ground prey too. They have an excellent sense of smell which gives them an advantage over some other types of dogs. The breed has three coats; smooth, long-haired and wire-haired. They are highly active and independent dogs, and their good nature makes them one of the most popular breeds of dog in the world. Because of their shape, however, they are prone to back injuries as well as Intervertebral Disc Disease which is usually caused by obesity.
