Pinta Island Tortoise – Signed Fine Art Print
$19.95 – $27.95
Information about the Pinta Island Tortoise:
The Pinta Island Tortoise also called the Pinta giant tortoise, and Abingdon Island tortoise is an extinct subspecies of Galápagos tortoise. It was found only on Pinta Island in the Galapagos Islands. The subspecies was described by Albert Günther in 1877 after specimens arrived in London. By the end of the 19th century, most of the Pinta Island tortoises had been wiped out due to hunting. By the mid-20th century, it was assumed that the subspecies was extinct until a single male was discovered on the island in 1971. Efforts were made to mate the male, named Lonesome George, with other subspecies, but no viable eggs were produced. Lonesome George died on 24 June 2012 and the subspecies was believed to have become extinct with the death of Lonesome George. However, 17 first-generation hybrids have been found at Wolf Volcano on Isabela Island during a recent trip by Yale University researchers. As these specimens are juveniles, their parents may still be alive.

Artist’s notes:
The Pinta Island Tortoise was completed on 12.19.2013. I was contacted by a private client in Australia to create a drawing of a Galapagos Tortoise in a very specific pose (head on shot with head raised up.) I had wanted to draw some of the sub-species of Galapagos Tortoise – including the famous “Lonesome George” – now since passed. So this was a good opportunity to do so. I reviewed several photos of him and came up with this pose. The client wanted just a black and white image, so I added the color and placed the drawing in the image library.
