Information about the Plumed Basilisk:
The Plumed Basilisk – also called the Green Basilisk, Double-Crested Basilisk, or Jesus Christ Lizard – is native to the tropical rainforests of eastern Honduras, through Nicaragua and Costa Rica and into western Panama. Males have three crests: one on the head, one on the back and one on the back, whereas the females one have one on their heads. They have the very curious ability to skip across short distances of water. That has given rise to the popular name “Jesus Christ Lizard.” They are omnivorous, feeding on small rodents, insects and insects as well as fruits and flowers.
The poster is printed on matte, museum-quality paper with Giclée printing quality:

Artist’s notes:
The Plumed Basilisk was completed on 7.1.2013. I recall seeing these amazing reptiles when visiting the rainforests of Costa Rica. They very much lived up to their name as the “Jesus Christ Lizard” as I watched them scamper across some small stretches of open water. I could see how this made an effective defense! One of the problems when illustrating animals like this, is that I always want to show the entire body. That can be tricky when the animal is very long, yet very short. I found a great reference photo by Ellen van Yperen which I then adapted to this drawing.
