The Royal Starfish is generally from in depths from 0-700 feet (0 – 200 metres) However it is most common in the mid continental shelf around 70-100 feet (20–30 meters). This starfish is found along the east coast and commonly along the southeast coast of the United States. The arms of the Royal Starfish are about 1-4 inches long (2–9 centimeters.) Astropecten articulatus is carnivorous, feeding on mollusks, which it grabs with its arms and then moves the animals to the center where the mouth is. Unlike other starfish, it swallows food whole. Artist’s notes:
The Royal Starfish was completed on 2.1.2014. The more I learn about the different species of starfish and sea stars the more I’m amazed at the different sizes, shapes and colors. When I started to put together a collage of these animals I researched the various species, and one that stood out was the Royal Starfish with it’s striking purple and orange coloration. The drawing took longer than I thought but I’m satisfied with the results.
