Information about the Tennessee Cave Salamander:
The Tennessee Cave Salamander is a member of the Plethodontidae family, which are lungless salamanders found mostly in the Western Hemisphere, from British Columbia all the way south to Brazil (however there are a few species in Europe and South Korea.) Gyrinophilus palleucus is native to the central United States, living in cave systems throughout central Tennessee, northern Alabama, and northwestern Kentucky. As the name implies, these amphibians are usually found in sinkhole-type caves or phreatic cave systems in the vicinity of sinkholes. This association is due to the nutrients that flow into these systems and the prey base they support. There are two subspecies: G. p. palleucus and G. p. necturoides.

Artist’s notes:
The Tennessee Cave Salamander was completed on 1.23.2012. This amphibians marks the last of the official amphibians of the US. This is a good example of this project compelling me to draw an animal I might not have drawn otherwise – but I really enjoyed rendering this cool looking salamander. The coloration of this species is also very rare because of unique environment it’s native to. The drawing is based on a photo by Kenny Wren.
