Information about the Western Tiger Swallowtail:
The Western Tiger Swallowtail is a common butterfly native to much of western North America. They are highly adaptable and are often seen in urban parks and gardens, as well as in rural woodlands and riparian areas. It is a large, brightly colored and active butterfly, rarely seen at rest; its wingspan is 2.75 to 4 inches (7 to 10 cm) The males of this species often congregate, along with other species of swallowtail, at pools and along streams and rivers; they drink from the water and mud, extracting minerals, as well as moisture.

Artist’s notes:
The Western Tiger Swallowtail was completed in the fall of 2015. When I was putting together a collage celebrating the wildlife of the National Parks of California, I wanted to include not just the iconic and amazing animals rarely seen, but some of the more commonplace ones – that you might even see in your backyard. The drawing is based on a photo by Ron Wolf and was used with permission.
