The Common Black Hawk is member of the family Accipitridae, which are one of the two major families of diurnal birds of prey. It is native to the southwestern US, down through Central America and into South America. It is a medium-sized raptor about 16-20 inches long (43–53 cm) It has a wingspan of roughly four feet. This hawk is a riparian nester and are dependent on mature, relatively undisturbed habitat supported by a streams that flow year round. They feed mostly on crustaceans such as crabs, as well as small vertebrates and eggs of other birds. They are not considered endangered. The Cooper's Hawk is a medium sized predatory bird of prey of the Accipiter genus. They are also known as a "Chicken Hawk." They're native to the North American continent and quite common in urban areas, where they feed on small songbirds, rodents and other small mammals. They are named for the naturalist William Cooper, who was one of the founders of the New York Academy of Sciences. This bird was greatly threatened by the use of DDT in the 70's as well as the mistaken belief they posed a considerable threat preying on commercial poultry, their numbers have rebounded and they are no longer considered threatened. Like other birds of prey these raptors feed on small mammals, reptiles, smaller birds and even insects. The Latin name means "royal" or "kingly" and their common name "ferruginous" means rusty color.
