Apes and Monkeys
Information about Apes:
An ape is any member of the biological superfamily Hominoidea (hominoids). Within this superfamily are two familes of hominoids, the first being “Hylobatidae.” This includes the species like the gibbon and siamang, or more commonly called the “lesser apes” and then there is the family of “Hominidae” and this includes the chimpanzees, gorillas, humans and orangutans, and these species represent the “great apes.” Apes are omnivorous, good problem solvers, highly intelligent and usually very adept at climbing trees (except the gorillas and humans.)
Apes have prehensile hands and feet, and their arms are generally longer than their legs. They are mostly native to Asia and Africa, however they have spread across the world due to various reasons. In the family of the great apes, most are threatened or endangered, usually due to habit loss and illegal capture and poaching. There was a time that humans were not included in this family, however studies have shown that we are closely related to this animals, and share much of the same DNA.

The Bornean Orangutan is one of two species of orangutan (the other being the Sumatran.) It is native to the island of Borneo, which is the largest island in Asia and the third largest in the world. The Bornean Orangutan is the third largest of the great apes, behind the two species of gorilla. It is the largest in Asia. Large males can weigh about 165 pounds (75 kg) with the females being smaller. They have very long arms which help them navigate the dense jungles where they live. Currently, this primate can be found in the two Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak, and three of the four Indonesian Provinces of Kalimantan. It is highly endangered due to habitat loss and illegal hunting. 100 years ago there were thought to be 315,000 orangutans in the wild. There are now less than 6,600 left in Sumatra, and less than 54,000 in Borneo. Western Lowland Gorillas are large terrestrial primates native to the montane, primary and lowland forests of Central Africa. It is the smallest of the gorilla sub-species; males usually stand about 5-6 feet (1.5-1.8 meters) weighing roughly 300-600 pounds (140-270 kilograms) Like other gorillas species the females are smaller than the males. The gorillas spend much of their time feeding on the forest floor. Their diet is mostly based on plants such as bamboo, but they will also eat insects and small reptiles. Western Lowland Gorillas are the ones that are usually seen in zoos, and there are several hundred in captivity all over the world. Due to habitat loss, poaching and other environmental pressures all gorillas in Africa are considered critically endangered, and the entire population in the wild of is thought to be less than 50,000 total animals. The White-Headed Capuchin is - also sometimes call the White-Faced capuchin or white-throated capuchin, is a medium-sized New World monkey of the family Cebidae. These primates are found in the forests of Central America and the extreme north-western portion of South America. They are very important to rainforest ecology for its role in dispersing seeds and pollen. Among the best known monkeys, the white-headed capuchin is recognized as the typical companion to the organ grinder. It is a highly intelligent monkey and has been trained to assist paraplegic persons. It is a medium-sized, weighing up to 3.9 kg (8.6 lb). It is mostly black, but with a pink face and white on much of the front part of the body, giving it its common name. It has a distinctive prehensile tail that is often carried coiled up and is used to help support the monkey when it is feeding beneath a branch. In the wild, the white-headed capuchin is versatile, living in many different types of forest, and eating many different types of food, including fruit, other plant material, invertebrates, and small vertebrates. It lives in troops that can exceed 20 animals and include both males and females. It is noted for its tool use, including rubbing plants over its fur in an apparent use of herbal medicine, and also using tools as weapons and for getting to food. It is a long-lived animal, with a maximum recorded age of over 54 years. The Golden Lion Tamarin is a small and very endangered primate native to a few tiny sections of rain forest in southern Brazil. There is estimated to be less than 1,000 in the wild and roughly 500 in zoos around the world. While still relatively small for a monkey, it is the largest of the family of Callitrichidae, which are the New World monkeys of tamarins and marmosets. They are about 10.5 inches long (26 cm) and weighs roughly 1.35 pounds (620 g.) The Golden Lion Tamarin is rarely encountered out of the trees, where it forages for food such as fruits, flowers, nectar, bird's eggs, insects and small vertebrates. They usually live in groups of up to individuals, and have a complex social order. While there are aggressive conservation programs working to save these primates from extinction, because there are so few remaining decline in genetic diversity is threatening them through inbreeding.
