Like other herons they patrol the shores and shallow areas looking for fish, frogs and invertebrates. The Green Kingfisher is can be found from southern Texas in the USA south through Central America to central Argentina in South America. The Green Kingfisher is about 7.5 inches long (19 centimeters) weighing roughly an ounce (26 grams). Like other species of kingfisher, it has the distinctive long bill and short tail. Both the male and females are colored an emerald green-blue, but the males have white underparts apart from a broad chestnut breast band and some green spotting on the sides. They can been seen besides streams, slow moving rivers, lakes and ponds eyeing the water, then diving in to capture small fish and aquatic insects. There are six recognized sub-species. It is one of three extant species of peafowl, the other two being the Blue or Indian Peafowl and the Congo Peafowl. Unlike the relative Blue Peafowl the sexes look fairly similar. Due to habitat loss and illegal poaching the species is considered endangered by the IUCN and other environmental organizations. It is the official symbol of the nation of Myanmar.
