Short-Beaked Common Dolphin – Signed Fine Art Print
Information about the Short-Beaked Common Dolphin:
Also sometimes called the Common Dolphin, Delphinus delphis is distributed widely throughout the world's oceans, from as far north as the the coasts of Norway south to nearly the tip of South America. Unlike some marine mammals, the Short-Beaked Common Dolphin's numbers are thought to be in the millions, although they do face serious threats like climate change, overfishing and pollution. These gregarious mammals are often live n large, active schools, and can be seen jumping and splashing. They are often so loud they can be heard from a considerable distance. These dolphins feed primarily on squid and fish, which are caught using cooperative fishing methods like herding large shoals of fish. Risso’s Dolphin – Signed Fine Art Print
Information about the Risso's Dolphin:
The Risso's Dolphin is a widespread cetacean found in many of the world's oceans. They're found worldwide in temperate and tropical waters, usually in deep waters rather, but often close to land. As well as the tropical parts of the Indian, Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, they are also found in the Persian Gulf and Mediterranean and Red Seas, but not the Black Sea. They range as far north as the Gulf of Alaska and southern Greenland and as far south as Tierra del Fuego.[3] Their preferred environment is just off the continental shelf on steep banks, with water depths varying from 400–1,000 m (1,300–3,300 ft) and water temperatures at least 10°C (50°F) and preferably 15-20°C (59-68°F). It is the only member of the genus Grampus. It's named after Antoine Risso, whose description formed the basis of the first public description of the animal, by Georges Cuvier, in 1812. Narwhal Whale – Signed Fine Art Print
Information about the Narwhal Whale:
The Narwhal - or Narwhale - is a marine mammal native to the freezing waters of the Arctic. Is it a toothed whale and one of two species of the Monodontidae family (the other being the Beluga Whale . They are most noted for their characteristic "horn" which is really an overgrown tusk that grown out of a hole in the animal's upper lip. Biologists have pondered for years why the Narwhal has this tusk, as it seems to serve no purpose. The Narwhale spends much of it's time under pack ice, diving to depths of about 4500 feet or 1500 meters. They are an important food source for the native peoples of the Canadian Arctic and Greenland. While the extreme remoteness of their habitat keeps their populations mostly stable, climate change is having an effect on these whale as the ocean's waters warm up and the dense pack ice retreats further north each year. Minke Whale – Signed Fine Art Print
Information about the Minke Whale:
The Minke Whale - as called the Lesser Rorqual - is a marine mammal of the order Cetacea. It is often classified as two species - the Common Minke Whale and the Antarctic Minke Whale. It is the second smallest of the baleen whales (only the aptly named Pygmy Whale is smaller) Minke Whales grow to be about 23-35 feet long with the males a being little longer. Adults will generally weigh 3-5 tons. These cetaceans are widely distributed throughout the world's oceans, and can be found from the poles to the tropics. They occasionally will come near coastal areas, but it appears they tend to prefer the open oceans. Due to whaling these large ocean going mammals, were at one times considered endangered, but thanks to the ban on whaling - respected by most countries - their numbers have rebounded and their numbers are stable. Ground Squirrels are small rodents and members of the genus Marmota which include marmots, chipmunks and prairie dogs. They live in large groups, dwelling in large communal areas, usually in and around rocky areas often not far from water. They are very alert animals, and when danger is sighted they emit a large audible squeak which warns the others to take cover. They are very successful animals, living all over the world and in many different types of environment. They will live in cities too, as long as there is room and a food source, which is usually vegetable matter like leaves, stems, flowers, seeds, berries and fruits. Long-Finned Pilot Whale – Signed Fine Art Print
Information about the Long-Fined Pilot Whale:
The Long-Fined Pilot Whale is one of three sub-species belonging to the genus Globicephala. It is a member of the oceanic dolphin family, although like the Orca or Killer Whale it is more whale-like in it's behavior. They are wide-ranging, medium-sized animals with a stocky, sturdy body. Their head has a large bulbous or square-like "melon". Females grow to be 12 feet long (3.7 meters). Males are somewhat larger at 15 feet (4.6 meters) An adult whale weighs 3,600 to 7,000 pounds (1.8 to 3.5 short tons.) They are sometimes called "Blackfish". There are two populations known of - one in the Northern Hemisphere in the North Atlantic, North and Baltic Seas. The other lives in Antarctic waters, covering the entire continental coastal areas. While their remote location makes guesses into their population difficult, these whales are protected under several international treaties. Hourglass Dolphin – Signed Fine Art Print
Information about the Hourglass Dolphin:
The Hourglass Dolphin is a small marine mammal of the Delphinidae Family. It inhabits Antarctic and sub-Antarctic waters. And for that reason, this dolphin is actually rarely seen by humans, and wasn't discovered and identified until 1824. In that time only a few specimens have ever been examined. These dolphins tend to travel in smaller pods of 5-10 adults, feeding on small fish and squid. These cetaceans are often seen in the company of Fin Whales and as early whalers used them as indicators that larger whales were in the area. Harbor Porpoise – Signed Fine Art Print
Information about the Harbor Porpoise:
The Harbor Porpoise is one of six species of porpoise. It is also one of the smallest marine mammals, growing to be about 4.5 - 6.5 feet long. As the name implies, this porpoise tends to stay in coastal areas or estuaries, although occasionally they venture up rivers and can be found hundreds of miles from the ocean. Harbor Porpoises feed on non-spiny fishes like herring, cod, whiting, squid, pollock, and sardines. They have been hunted for centuries, but the animal is not considered endangered - although it appears their overall numbers are declining.
