The Bornean Orangutan is one of two species of orangutan (the other being the Sumatran.) It is native to the island of Borneo, which is the largest island in Asia and the third largest in the world. The Bornean Orangutan is the third largest of the great apes, behind the two species of gorilla. It is the largest in Asia. Large males can weigh about 165 pounds (75 kg) with the females being smaller. They have very long arms which help them navigate the dense jungles where they live. Currently, this primate can be found in the two Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak, and three of the four Indonesian Provinces of Kalimantan. It is highly endangered due to habitat loss and illegal hunting. 100 years ago there were thought to be 315,000 orangutans in the wild. There are now less than 6,600 left in Sumatra, and less than 54,000 in Borneo. The Asian or Oriental Small-Clawed Otter is a member of the family Mustelidae. They're native to the mangrove swamps, tidal pools and freshwater wetlands of much of Southeast Asia and southern China. Of all otter species in the world, Aonyx cinerea is the smallest of them all. Their name comes from the relatively small claws they have, which barely extend out past the pads of their paws. Like other otter species, they are highly skilled hunters and can feed upon a large variety of animals, such as crustaceans and mollusks, smaller invertebrates, amphibians and fish. They will also prey on smaller mammals and reptiles. Due to habit loss, pollutions and loss of food sources they are now considered vulnerable by some environmental organizations. The Asian Black Bear - also called the Moon Bear or White-Chested Bear - is a medium-sized species of bear, largely adapted for arboreal life, seen across much of the Himalayas and the northern parts of the Indian Subcontinent, Taiwan, Korea, northeastern China, the Russian far east and the Honsha and Shikoku islands of Japan. It is classed by the IUCN as a vulnerable species, mostly due to deforestation and active hunting for its body parts. The species is morphologically very similar to some prehistoric bears, and is thought by some scientists to be the ancestor of other extant bear species. Though largely herbivorous, Asian black bears can be very aggressive toward humans, and have frequently attacked people without provocation. Black bears typically inhabit deciduous forests, deserts, mixed forests and thornbrush forests. They rarely live in elevations of more than 12,000 feet (3,700 m). They usually inhabit elevations around 11,480 feet (3,500 m) in the Himalayas in the summer, and will climb down to 4,920 feet (1,500 m) in winter. They sometimes occur at sea level in Japan. The Australian Dingo is a free-roaming carnivore and member of the Canidae family, which are "wolf-like" or "dog-like" animals. It is believed that the dingo might have arrived with humans from Southeast Asia thousands of years ago. This would mean that the animals would have evolved to the conditions of Australia, and having been so separated and isolated they developed into their own unique species. Dingo live in a variety of habitats, including deserts, mountains, tropical forests as well as some urban areas where they occasionally can come into conflict with humans. They play an important role as one of Australia's apex predators. Over the last decades, the species has been interbreeding with the domestic dog, which they are close relatives to, and these dog-dingo hybrids now have caused their conservation status to be considered 'vulnerable.' The Platypus - or 'Duck-Billed' Platypus, is a small, semi-aquatic mammal native to the small streams and rivers of the eastern coasts of Australia. It can be found from the highlands of Tasmania and the Australian Alps, to the lush tropical rainforests of coastal Queensland, and north to the base of the Cape York Peninsula. It is a type of echinda, and one of only five living monotremes (which are mammals that lay eggs.) When the first specimen of this animal was brought to Europe from Australia, it was greeted with a mix of amazement and skepticism - with some observers going to far as to declare it a hoax. But of course eventually it was proved to be a real animal. On top of being one of the few mammals that lay eggs, it also has the distinction of also being venomous. The male of the species has a sharp spur on the hind foot that can deliver a venom capable of causing severe pain to humans, although it is generally not fatal. The American Foxhound is a scent hound and is related to the English Foxhound. The breed came from England in the 1600s. They were developed in Europe to hunt as a pack and, as the name implies, specifically for the hunting of foxes. The American Foxhound is somewhat taller and rangier than it's English relative. Both breeds are generally tri-colored (brown, black and white) although they can be almost any color. They are medium-sized dogs with a narrow chest and a long muzzle, which helps track the scent of the prey it has been pursuing. It is the official dog of the state of Virginia.
