Western Lowland Gorilla – Signed Fine Art Print
Information about the Western Lowland Gorilla:
Western Lowland Gorillas are large terrestrial primates native to the montane, primary and lowland forests of Central Africa. It is the smallest of the gorilla sub-species; males usually stand about 5-6 feet (1.5-1.8 meters) weighing roughly 300-600 pounds (140-270 kilograms) Like other gorillas species the females are smaller than the males. The gorillas spend much of their time feeding on the forest floor. Their diet is mostly based on plants such as bamboo, but they will also eat insects and small reptiles. Western Lowland Gorillas are the ones that are usually seen in zoos, and there are several hundred in captivity all over the world. Due to habitat loss, poaching and other environmental pressures all gorillas in Africa are considered critically endangered, and the entire population in the wild of is thought to be less than 50,000 total animals. The Cincinnati Zoo in Ohio is noted for it's success in breeding these rare apes. Among the best known monkeys, the white-headed capuchin is recognized as the typical companion to the organ grinder. It is a highly intelligent monkey and has been trained to assist paraplegic persons. It is a medium-sized, weighing up to 3.9 kg (8.6 lb). It lives in troops that can exceed 20 animals and include both males and females. It is noted for its tool use, including rubbing plants over its fur in an apparent use of herbal medicine, and also using tools as weapons and for getting to food. It is a long-lived animal, with a maximum recorded age of over 54 years. Golden Lion Tamarin – Signed Fine Art Print
Information about the Golden Lion Tamarin:
The Golden Lion Tamarin is a small and very endangered primate native to a few tiny sections of rain forest in southern Brazil. There is estimated to be less than 1,000 in the wild and roughly 500 in zoos around the world. While still relatively small for a monkey, it is the largest of the family of Callitrichidae, which are the New World monkeys of tamarins and marmosets. They are about 10.5 inches long (26 cm) and weighs roughly 1.35 pounds (620 g.) The Golden Lion Tamarin is rarely encountered out of the trees, where it forages for food such as fruits, flowers, nectar, bird's eggs, insects and small vertebrates. They usually live in groups of up to individuals, and have a complex social order. While there are aggressive conservation programs working to save these primates from extinction, because there are so few remaining decline in genetic diversity is threatening them through inbreeding. Cotton-Top Tamarin – Signed Fine Art Print
Information about the Cotton-Top Tamarin:
The Cotton-Top Tamarin is a very small monkey found only in a very small area of the tropical rainforests of northern Columbia. It is a member of the family Callitrichidae, which are marmosets and tamarins. They have a very distinctive white crest that extends from the forehead to the shoulders. They weigh only about one pound (.55 kilograms.) They are diurnal and arboreal, rarely coming down from the trees their entire lives. They are omnivorous, feeding on insects as well as vegetable matter, such as various fruits. They are important seed dispensers and many plants count on this to procreate in the rainforest. They are one of the more critically endangered primates in the world, with perhaps as few as only 6,000 animals in the wild. They are highly social animals, living in groups of about 6-13 individuals. Several conservation groups have aggressively attempted to stave off extinction for many years, but the tamarin's future remains uncertain. Common Warthog – Signed Fine Art Print
Information about the Warthog:
The Warthog or Common Warthog is a wild pig that lives in the savanna habitats of central and southern Africa. Warthogs range in size from three to 5 feet long (0.91 to 1.5 metres) and weighing about 110 to 170 pounds (50 to 75 kg). Phacochoerus africanus has four recoginzed subspecies, and is identifiable by the two pairs of pointed tusks protruding from the mouth, which are used as weapons against predators. Warthogs are omnivorous, and feed on a variety of grasses, roots, berries and other fruits, bark, fungi, eggs and even carrion. The large tusks made from ivory sometimes result in the poaching of these animals, although at this time they are not considered threatened and their numbers are stable.
