Pygmy Hippopotamus – Signed Fine Art Print
Information about the Pygmy Hippopotamus:
The Pygmy Hippopotamus is a large semi-aquatic mammal native to the swampy forests of West Africa. It has a very limited range in Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea and the Ivory Coast. While it is a separate species, it is very similar to the more common Hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius) only about 1/2 as tall and about 1/4 as heavy. And unlike their cousins, they are shy and retiring usually being more active at night than in the daytime. The pygmy hippo is herbivorous, feeding on ferns, broad-leaved plants, grasses and fruits it finds in the forests. Pygmy hippos spend most of the day hidden in rivers. They will rest in the same spot for several days in a row, before moving to a new spot. At least some pygmy hippos make use of dens or burrows that form in river banks. Like the common hippopotamus, the pygmy hippo emerges from the water at dusk to feed. It is considered endangered by several conservation groups. Mountain Gorilla – Signed Fine Art Print
Information about the Mountain Gorilla:
Mountain Gorillas are one of two subspecies of Eastern Gorilla. These large and powerful primates are only be found in four national parks of the Virunga Mountains in Central Africa. While these animals are very strong, they are also generally gentle and shy. They live in groups of 2-40 individuals, averaging about 11. Wild male gorillas can weigh up to 300 to 400 pounds (135 to 180 kg) while females are usually about half that size. Adult males are roughly 5.5 feet tall (1.68 meters) with an arm span or from 7.5 to 8.5 feet (2.3 to 2.6 meters). Female gorillas are somewhat shorter with smaller arm spans. Groups are led by a dominant male called a 'Silverback'. The Mountain Gorilla is a herbivore that eats over 100 different species of plants. They are critically endangered due to habitat loss, poaching and decades of civil war in the areas they live. As of Spring in 2010 their entire population in the wild was estimated to be less than 800 individuals. Gorillas can be identified by their nose prints, which are unique to each animal.
