Pig Frog – Signed Fine Art Print
Information about the Pig Frog:
The Pig Frog - also sometimes called the Lagoon Frog or Southern Bullfrog - is an aquatic amphibian found on the edges of lakes, swamps and marshes. It is a member of the family Ranidae or "true frogs." They get their name from their distinctive pointed and pig like nose, along with the distinctive call which sounds like the grunt of a pig. These amphibians are common around the edges of water, in lakes, ponds and ditches, or floating in shallow water. They are mostly active at night. They feed on nearly anything they can swallow such as invertebrates, crustaceans, fish and amphibians. Despite the overall decline of many of the world's amphibians, the Pig Frog's numbers seem fairly stable and they're common in their range. The legs of these frogs are considered delicacies to some, and they are often hunted at night using flashlights and lanterns. Baltimore Checkerspot Butterfly – Signed Fine Art Print
Information about the Baltimore Checkerspot Butterfly:
The Baltimore Checkerspot Butterfly is a smaller butterfly native to north central and north eastern regions of North America. It prefers areas that have abundant wet meadows that have the White Turtlehead (Chelone glabra) plant, which it is dependent on as a food source and place to reproduce. This striking butterfly gets it name not from the city in Maryland but that it has the same orange and black colors found on the crest for the American Colonist and the Maryland state flag. The butterfly has seen it's number decrease over the years due to development of the land it depends on to reproduce, and an overpopulation of White-Tailed deer who feed on the White Turtlehead plant. In 1973 the Baltimore Checkerspot Butterfly was officially selected as the state Butterfly of Maryland in the US. Pickerel Frog – Signed Fine Art Print
Information about the Pickerel Frog:
The Pickerel Frog is a medium sized amphibian native to the eastern parts of US and Canada. They're found in cool wooded areas nearby ponds, lakes and slow moving streams. They are often found in grassy fields during the summer months. The Pickerel Frog is sometimes confused with the Leopard Frog, but the Pickerel's spots are generally larger, and in two rows on their backs whereas the Leopard's are more scattered and irregular. These frogs are carnivores feeding on insects and other invertebrates. The Pickerel Frog is believed to have a poison that can kill other frogs, but is harmless to humans. The Pickerel Frog will protect itself from potential predators by giving off a poisonous chemical. This chemical can irritate humans and can even kill captive animals forced to share living space with this frog. Pennsylvania Firefly – Signed Fine Art Print
Information about the Pennsylvania Firefly:
The Pennsylvania Firefly - also called the lightning bug and glowworm (in it's larval stage) is native to open fields, forests and pastures in the eastern part of North America. It is not a fly, but rather a member of the order Coleoptera, which are beetles. They are about 3/4 of an inch long (2 centimeters) They are naturally known for their use of bioluminescence, which it uses in both the larval stage and as an adult for dual purposes - to attract mates and also prey. The Pennsylvania Firefly feeds on a variety of invertebrates - such as other insects, flies and even land snails. Across North America there have been reports of declining numbers of fireflies in areas they were once very common. Overuse of harsh pesticides and herbicides along with the habitat loss required by larval life stages (especially in suburban and rural areas) coupled with the massive drought are all likely factors in the decline of the firefly. Valley Elderberry Longhorn Beetle – Signed Fine Art Print
Information about the Valley Elderberry Longhorn Beetle:
The Valley Elderberry Longhorn Beetle is a subspecies of longhorn beetle native to the riparian forests of the Central Valley of California from Redding to Bakersfield. The insect is listed as a Federally threatened species. They are medium sized beetles, growing to about .5-1.0 inch (1.25-2.5 cm) with the females slightly larger. Due to the extensive and widespread habitat loss, there is a push to help protect this beetle along with the ever shrinking habitat of riparian (the interface between land and a river or stream) forests which the beetle needs to survive. Grapevine Beetle – Signed Fine Art Print
Information about the Grapevine Beetle:
The Grapevine Beetle - also called the Spotted June Beetle or the Spotted Pelidnota - is a member of the subfamily Rutelinae of the Scarab beetle family. These insects are are fairly common in the north and central United States and Eastern Canada. They grow to be about 1 inch long (2.5 cm) While some beetles can cause massive damage to crops the Grapevile Beetles does relatively little damage to their host plants. The beetles fly at a fast speed, usually in a curving flight. There are many color variations, so many that at one time there was thought to be ten subspecies (these were all eventually discarded and there are no subspecies) Like many other beetles they are found in forests, thickets, and woods, and is mostly seen during the summer. Active flyers, these beetles are commonly attracted to lights at night. It is also seen in vineyards and gardens, which is what gives the beetle it's common name. The adult beetle eats the leaves and fruit of grapevines, both wild and cultivated, although it is not normally a major pest of vineyards. Beetle eggs are laid in rotten wood, tree stumps, or on soil near the host plant, where they hatch into larvae. Larvae then dig their way into the soil, where they feed on rotted wood. Pupal chambers are built shallowly underground.
