Japanese Rhinoceros Beetle – Signed Fine Art Print
Information about the Japanese Rhinoceros Beetle:
The Japanese Rhinoceros or Horned Beetle is native to several countries of Asia, including China, Korea Taiwan and of course Japan. They are found in forests, where they feed upon rotten fruits, decaying wood, nectar, sap and other vegetable matter. They are quite popular in the pet industry and are often kept in homes. Unfortunately, they are also often used for gambling exploiting the beetle's natural instincts to fight one another. In some communities this is a chronic problem causing many to lose a good deal of money. The beetles are relatively short-lived, with the males dying after mating a few times and the females dying shortly after they lay eggs. They are not endangered, but like many animal in Asia the natural environments they rely upon are quickly disappearing. Gopher Beetle – Signed Fine Art Print
Information about the Gopher Beetle:
The Gopher Beetle is found only in California, and within California is only known from a few localities in Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties. Currently, it is the only know species of the genus Ceratophyus in the Western Hemisphere. The body of this beetle is a polished black with an almost square shape. Adults grow to be about .75-1 inch long (15-23 mm). Males have prominent, forward projecting horns on the center of the thorax and head. The legs, especially the front pair, and strongly serrated, and notably adapted for burrowing. The wing covers have faint but visible converging creases. The genus is not found anywhere else in North America, although related species live all across Eurasia. Though originally believed to be introduced, the species is distinct from any known members of Ceratophyus known from the Old World. Adults are active in the winter, tunneling six feel or more into the soil in search of fungi, pushing up sandy mounds 3 to 6 inches high, which give the beetle its common name. The beetles are indeed fairly large with a length of about an inch to an inch and a half (27-35 mm.) These beetles live on in freshwater, usually with a good amount of plant life. While they spend much of their time in and under the water's surface, they are very able fliers, which they usually do only at night. Desert Blister Beetle – Signed Fine Art Print
Information about the Desert Blister Beetle:
The Desert Blister Beetle is a species of blister beetle found in southwestern North America. Typically 16 to 33 mm (0.6 to 1.3 in) in length, L. magister has a striking red head, legs and prothorax, with black elytra. They can be found in great numbers in the Mojave and Colorado Deserts in spring, and are often seen in swarms. Females lay eggs in holes in the desert soil. The larvae are insectivorous, mainly attacking bee nests. They consume the immature host along with its provisions, and can often survive on the provisions alone, thus they are not obligatory parasitoids but rather food parasites that are parasitoid, or simply predatory. Adults feed on flowers and leaves of brittlebush. Common Eastern Firefly – Signed Fine Art Print
Information about the Common Eastern Firefly:
The Common Eastern Firefly - also called the lightning bug and glowworm (in it's larval stage) is native to open fields, forests and pastures in the eastern part of North America. It is not a fly, but rather a member of the order Coleoptera, which are beetles. Males of the specues locate females by a series of bright flashes. The females then respond with a coded delay flash. The light organ of P. pryalis is composed of two layers; a layer of refractile cells on the dorsal side and a photic layer with light producing cells on the ventral side. The light organ (specifically the photogenic layer) is supplied with numerous tracheal branches, which are thought to provide the required oxygen for light production. Pupae of these beetles have different light organs than the adult. They do not have the characteristic tracheal end cells in that of the flashing adults, and whereas the adult emit bright flashes, pupae emit low intensity glowing. While the Photinus pyralis remains the most abundant of North America's fireflies, their numbers are reduced every year due to various environmental pressures such as habitat loss.
