Information about the Black-Banded Sea Krait:
The Black-Banded Sea Krait – also called the Chinese Sea Snake or erabu umi hebi – is a member of the Laticauda genus of sea snakes. It is most commonly found in warm waters of the western Pacific Ocean, usually not far from shore in the coral reefs. Which it shaped like many of the terrestrial species of snake, the tail is flatted with extended skin, spread wide like a fin and this is used to aid in swimming. It is a nocturnal snake and rarely seen during the day. It requires oxygen to breathe, so breaks the surface at least once every six hours. It is too slow to catch fish in a straight chase, so it hunts for fish hiding in the coral. The bite is highly venomous and paralyzes the prey. Females lay their eggs on land. Generally, the species is found in Fiji, southern Japan and Singapore. Their venom is ten times stronger than that of a cobra, making them extremely dangerous. But unless this snake is cornered or feels otherwise threatened by humans it will not bite.

Artist’s notes:
The illustration of the Black-Banded Sea Krait was completed on 11.1.2013. This snake represents the last of the animals of the Great Barrier Reef collage that I’ve spent the last few weeks putting together. This was kind of a challenging subject, the eye tends to picture snakes on the ground. And of course this is a sea snake and I wanted to show it swimming in the water. I ended up making two versions – the second one with the fish, coral water – and I think it turned out pretty good.

The Olive Ridley Sea Turtle - also called the Pacific Ridley Sea Turtle - is considered the most abundant sea turtle on the planet. These reptiles get their name from the coloring of their heart-shaped shell, which starts out gray but becomes olive green later in life. There may be more than one million in the world's oceans today. Compared to other sea turtle species adults are relatively small, weighing on average around 100 pounds (45 kg). Olive Ridleys can be seen at nesting sites on beaches all around the planet, generally in tropical and subtropical areas. When the females are getting ready to nest, its believed they use the wind and the tide to help them find the beach. Females will lay about a hundred eggs, and may nest 1-3 times a year. Olive Ridleys are mostly carnivorous, feeding on such creatures as jellyfish as well as small crustaceans such as crabs and shrimp.
