Information about the Bog Turtle:
The Bog Turtle is a small reptile native to the eastern parts of the US. It is considered endangered and is protected by the Federal Endangered Species Act. It is the smallest species of turtle in North America and one of the smallest in the world – weighing only about 4 ounces when fully grown and having a length of about 4-5 inches. Bog turtles spend most of their time under water, buried in mud or hidden in thick vegetation. It is illegal to harm, capture or disturb them.

Artist’s notes:
The Bog Turtle was completed on 10.16.09. It was the second attempt at these rendering the species. These tiny turtles are very beautiful and, like many others of their kind, have the uncanny trait that makes them seem as though they’re smiling. The particular model I used for this drawing had a lovely duo-tone shell of copper-brown and black. Some bog turtles have much more uniformly dark colored shells with little contrast.
