Coconut Crab is a species of terrestrial hermit crab. It’s also called the Robber Crab or Palm Thief. It is the largest land-living arthropod in the world, and is probably at the upper size limit for terrestrial animals with exoskeletons in recent times, with a weight of up to nine pounds (4.1 kg). It can grow to up to 3 feet 3 inches (1 m) in length from leg to leg. It is found on islands across the Indian Ocean and parts of the Pacific Ocean. The Coconut Crab has a well-developed sense of smell, which it uses to locate its food

Artist’s notes:
The Coconut Crab was completed on 4.18.2016. My friend and business partner in Japan suggested I draw a Coconut Crab – and he sent me photos of him holding one! I’m unsure if he owns one as a pet, or just knew a place where one could be handled. I found a great reference photo by the talented wildlife photographer Charlie Summers who was kind enough to allow me to us it as reference to create this drawing.
