Information about the Asian Small-Clawed Otter:
The Asian or Oriental Small-Clawed Otter is a member of the family Mustelidae. They’re native to the mangrove swamps, tidal pools and freshwater wetlands of much of Southeast Asia and southern China. Of all otter species in the world, Aonyx cinerea is the smallest of them all. Their name comes from the relatively small claws they have, which barely extend out past the pads of their paws. Like other otter species, they are highly skilled hunters and can feed upon a large variety of animals, such as crustaceans and mollusks, smaller invertebrates, amphibians and fish. They will also prey on smaller mammals and reptiles. Due to habit loss, pollutions and loss of food sources they are now considered vulnerable by some environmental organizations.

Artist’s notes:
The Asian or Oriental Small-Clawed Otter was completed on 12.3.2014. Some time ago I became fascinated with these wonderful little animals. Living in the Bay Area, not far from the Monterey area, Sea otters figure pretty large in the local mindset. I decided to create a collage of some various species of otter, as I had already drawn 3-4 of them. I’ll likely be adding an African Clawless Otter shortly. The drawing is based on a photo by Nigel Wedge and was used with his permission.

Information about the Margay:
The Margay is a smaller member of the feline family. It is native to southern North America, down through much of Central America and most of South America. Like many other species of cat, the Margay is a solitary hunter. It prefers remote sections of very dense tropical and subtropical rainforests and cloudforests. It looks similar to the Ocelot, but the head is a little smaller with longer legs and tail. The cat weighs from 5.7 to 8.8 pounds (2.6 to 4 kilograms), with a body length of 19 to 31 inches (48 to 79 centimeters), and a tail length of 13 to 20 in (33 to 51 centimeters.)
