Information about the Golden Lion Tamarin:
The Golden Lion Tamarin is a small and very endangered primate native to a few tiny sections of rain forest in southern Brazil. There is estimated to be less than 1,000 in the wild and roughly 500 in zoos around the world. While still relatively small for a monkey, it is the largest of the family of Callitrichidae, which are the New World monkeys of tamarins and marmosets. They are about 10.5 inches long (26 cm) and weighs roughly 1.35 pounds (620 g.) The Golden Lion Tamarin is rarely encountered out of the trees, where it forages for food such as fruits, flowers, nectar, bird’s eggs, insects and small vertebrates. They usually live in groups of up to individuals, and have a complex social order. While there are aggressive conservation programs working to save these primates from extinction, because there are so few remaining decline in genetic diversity is threatening them through inbreeding.

Artist’s notes:
The Golden Lion Tamarin was completed on 3.29.2014. This is the second tamarin I’ve drawn (the other being the Cotton-Top, which I had been meaning to draw for many years.) This drawing isn’t as successful as the previous tamarin, and I’m not sure why. Something about the texture of the fur didn’t quite gel, or maybe the pose isn’t interesting enough. I will likely draw the Emperor Tamarin next to finish out the series of three tamarin I was asked to draw by Eden in Australia. The drawing is based on a photo by Ellen van Yperen and was used with permission.

Information about the Margay:
The Margay is a smaller member of the feline family. It is native to southern North America, down through much of Central America and most of South America. Like many other species of cat, the Margay is a solitary hunter. It prefers remote sections of very dense tropical and subtropical rainforests and cloudforests. It looks similar to the Ocelot, but the head is a little smaller with longer legs and tail. The cat weighs from 5.7 to 8.8 pounds (2.6 to 4 kilograms), with a body length of 19 to 31 inches (48 to 79 centimeters), and a tail length of 13 to 20 in (33 to 51 centimeters.) Because of unregulated hunting and habitat loss this cat is considered endangered by some environmental groups.
