Information about the Huon or Matschie’s Tree Kangaroo:
The Matschie’s Tree Kangaroo is native to the mountain rainforests of the Huon Peninsula of the northeastern part of New Guinea. It is named for the German naturalist Paul Matschie. They feed on leaves, sap, insects, flowers and nuts. They are considered endangered, mostly due to the destruction of the trees in which they live, but some 100,000 acres of the Huon Peninsula have been set aside to help preserve these species in the wild

Artist’s notes:
The Huon Tree Kangaroo was completed on 9.1.2010. I can’t recall where I first came across an image of a tree kangaroo, but immediately I felt a connection to this wonderful animal. As I did some research, I quickly realized there were a few different species, and I had to settle on one. At least for the first illustration. Of course, I wanted to show a mother with young, peeping out of this marsupial’s distinctive pouch. I added this kangaroo to a collection of animals I find to be as amazing as anything from another planet imagined by sci-fi writers.
