Information about the Kaibab Squirrel:
The Kaibab Squirrel is a rodent that lives in the Kaibab Plateau which is in the Southwestern United States, in an area of 20 by 40 miles (30 by 60 km). The squirrel’s habitat is completely confined to the Ponderosa Pine forests of the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park and the northern section of Kaibab National Fores around the town of Jacob Lake, Arizona. It is not found anywhere else in the world. The squirrel feeds on acorns, fruit, and fungi as well as the seeds, bark, and twigs of the trees where it lives. In 1965, 200,000 acres (800 km²) of Kaibab squirrel habitat within Grand Canyon National Park and Kaibab National Forest were declared the Kaibab Squirrel National Natural Landmark.

Artist’s notes:
The Kaibab Squirrel was completed on July 19th, 2014. A friend of mine had been hiking in the Grand Canyon and told me stories of a green colored squirrel he had seen there. While I reasoned his memory of a brightly colored green squirrel was just a tad off the actual coloration of the animal, I was compelled to track it down. Turns out that the squirrel does indeed have a drab olive coloration to it, that is fairly unusual in the animal kingdom. Most specimens have the color only running down their backs as the subject for the drawing here does. The illustration is based on a photo by Barbara am Ende and was used with permission.
