Northern Pike – Signed Fine Art Print
$19.95 – $27.95
Information about the Northern Pike:
The Northern Pike – simply called “pike” in Europe, jackfish in Canada or “northern” in the mid-western parts of the US – is a freshwater carnivorous fish native to lakes and slow moving rivers throughout much of North America, Europe and Central Asia. They are highly adaptive animals and have been introduced into areas with brackish water (a mix of salt and seawater) and managed to establish themselves. They can grow to be quite large, with lengths of about 60 inches (150 centimeters) and weighing over 55 pounds (25 kilograms) The heaviest specimen ever caught weighed 68 pounds (31 kilograms) These fish are extremely popular with anglers, and large individuals are highly sought after. Unfortunately, due to their popularity they have been “fished out” of many lakes. Even with this pressure, the fish is so adaptable and widespread it is not considered endangered by any group. It is the state fish of North Dakota.

Artist’s notes:
The Northern Pike was completed on 3.6.2013. These fish are legendary when I grew up in Minnesota. They are kind of all about what fishing in the north woods represents. I think I caught a very small one many years ago, although my memory might not be so clear on this point. Regardless, when it came time to draw one for the 50 States Project (drawing all official animals of the US states) I was happy to render one. I found a great reference photo by Eric Engbretson and adding the lily pads came up with a pretty good rendering of these amazing fish.
