Information about the Paper Kite Butterfly:
The Paper Kite Butterfly is native to Southeast Asia. Due to habitat destruction they are considered critically endangered. They are members of the family Nymphalidae which are the largest family of butterflies, having about 6,000 species distributed throughout most of the world. The Paper Kite Butterfly are usually medium sized to large butterflies. Most species have a reduced pair of forelegs and many hold their colorful wings flat when resting. They are also called brush-footed butterflies or four-footed butterflies. The butterfly glides gracefully amongst the treetops and floats like a piece of paper. The butterfly is though to be distasteful to predators. These butterflies do well in captivity and are often seen at butterfly houses around the world.

Artist’s notes:
The Paper Kite was completed on 10.9.2013. There are few animals I enjoy drawing more than butterflies. I am putting together a collection of butterflies of North America, and while choosing the species, I remembered seeing the Paper Kite at a butterfly house I had visited. Though not as colorful as some of the other species of butterfly – the black and white coloration making it highly distinctive. The drawing is based on a photo by Bernard Spragg.
