Peacock Mantis Shrimp – Signed Fine Art Print
$19.95 – $27.95
Information about the Peacock Mantis Shrimp:
The Peacock Mantis Shrimp – also called the Smashing Mantis Shrimp, Clown Shrimp, Harlequin Mantis Shrimp and Painted Mantis Shrimp. It is not actually a shrimp, but rather a marine crustacean and the members of the order Stomatopoda. They are native to the warm waters of the Indo-Pacific, generally found close to reefs in sand and rubble areas with several burrows to hide in. Males are usually brighter than females, with juveniles having more of a yellowish color. They are formidable hunters, using their hammerlike claws to smash through mollusk shells but will also eat fish. Mantis Shrimps have excellent eye sight with large eyes mounted on stalks these can swivel to give almost 360 degrees of vision. Spearing mantis shrimps are usually found in their holes with just their heads showing, waiting for their prey. Mantis Shrimps have been known to attack and injure divers who approach to close.

Artist’s notes:
The Peacock Mantis Shrimp was completed on 7.4.2013. I had learned about these amazing animals some years ago, and had intended to draw one for some time. I even had an excellent reference photo by Brian Means that had been sitting in my “to do” folder for a few years. (The colors of this shrimp might be the most vibrant of any of the previous animals I’ve rendered.) But today I found the time and inspiration to add this crustacean to the image library.
