They are sometimes called “17 year locusts” but they are not actually locusts, which belong to a different order. Adult cicada are usually about 1-1.5 inches (2.4 to 3.3 centimeters) which the females being slightly larger than males. While cicadas don’t sting or bite, their proboscis can inflict a painful pierce if it comes in contact with human skin. While cicadas are fairly common when they emerge, they are more often seen than heard, as they’re usually far up in the trees and out of most people’s sight.

Description

Fine art illustration of a Periodical Cicada (Magicicada sp.) The illustration is available in black and white or color.

Artist’s notes:

The Periodical Cicada was completed on 3.28.2012. I recall hearing cicadas in the summertime growing up in Minneapolis – although I never actually saw one or was even sure what insect was making the off high-pitched sound. Cicadas were also important, as when I was transitioning to color from black and white I was highly influenced by an illustration of a cicada I had seen, and would be a pattern for my future illustrations. The drawing is based on a photo by Jason Means.
