Information about the Purple Finch:
The Purple Finch is a smaller songbird and member of the Fringillidae, which include 24 or so different species of the world’s finches. These birds grow to be about 4 inches long (15 centimeters) and weigh a little over 1 ounce (34 grams.) They are native to much of the eastern part of North America, as well as smaller areas on the West Coast and much of Canada. They are a very common sight at backyard birdfeeders. When they are not feeding in urban or rural areas, they can be found in various types of forests, open fields, meadows and brush areas where they feed on various plant matter such as seeds, berries and millet. They also eat small insects when they can catch them. The Purple Finch is the official state bird of New Hampshire.

Artist’s notes:
The Purple Finch illustration was completed on 6.13.2012. This marks the fourth songbird I’ve drawn for the 50 State Project – it being the state bird of New Hampshire. I love the colors in this bird, along with the lovely mottled patterns on the body and the split coloration on the wings. It really was a pleasure to illustrate this beautiful songbird. The drawing i based on a photo by Don Delaney.
