Information about the Woodhouse’s Toad:
The Woodhouse’s Toad is a medium-sized toad native to the United States and Mexico. It’s native range is throughout most of central and southwestern USA and portions of adjacent northern Mexico. It is not found from high mountains and the West Coast. Woodhouse’s Toad can be found in grasslands, deserts and semi-desert shrublands, river valleys and floodplains and agricultural areas. The toad often burrows underground or hides under rocks, plants, or other cover when inactive. Eggs and larvae develop in the shallow water of marshes, rain pools, ponds, lakes, reservoirs, flooded areas, and other bodies of water lacking a strong current. There are currently two supspecies: Southern Woodhouse’s Toad (Bufo woodhousii australis) and the Rocky Mountain Toad (Bufo woodhousii woodhousii)

Artist’s notes:
The Woodhouse’s Toad was completed on 5.7.2013. There are a few dozen species of toad native to North America. I have no clue if, over the course of the next few decades, I will be able to complete drawings of all of them. But slowly I’m adding species, and today I finished this species so that’s one more down – making 10 different total species of toad that are in the image gallery. The drawing is based on a photo by Alice Abela.

The Colorado River Toad - also called the Sonoran Desert Toad - is a large amphibian native to the deserts the southwestern United States and northern parts of Mexico. They spend a large part of their lives in underground burrows, venturing out only to feed and mate and only when the conditions are right. Information about the Eastern American Toad:
The Eastern American Toad is a small to medium sized amphibian native to much of the eastern parts of North America, from the northeastern parts of Canada, down south into Georgia and east through much of the mid-western states. It is a subspecies of the American Toad. They are found in the swamps, marshes, ponds of the forests. Once they grow to adulthood, they spent most of their lives on dry land, returning to the water only to breed. Like other similar species, the coloration of the Eastern American Toad varies, from a dark, dingy browns and grays to bright reds, oranges and flashes of yellow. The toad feeds on various small invertebrates such as worms, crickets, spiders, slugs, ants. Predators of the toad include the Northern Raccoon, Eastern Garter Snake and Hog-Nosed Snakes.
