Information about the Bandwing Flying Fish:
The Bandwing Flying Fish is a member of the family of marine fish in the order Beloniformes of class Actinopterygii. They are native to the warm tropical ocean waters of the west-central part of the Pacific. About 64 species are grouped in seven to nine genera. Flying fish can make powerful, self-propelled leaps out of water into air, where their long, wing-like fins enable gliding flight for considerable distances above the water’s surface. This uncommon ability is a natural defense mechanism to evade predators.

Artist’s notes:
The Bandwing Flying Fish was completed on 9.25.2014. I had been kicking around the idea of creating a drawing of flying fish for a few years, but always seemed to put it on the back burner. There are many interesting species, but there are surprisingly (or not surprisingly) few good reference photos out there. I found a few for this species and put together the layout as shown, after several sketches and experimentation with the position of the fish. Looking at it now I think it’s one of my favorite pieces I’d done in some time.
