Information about the Wood Ducks:
The Wood Duck is a medium-sized perching duck. They grow to about 19 inches long and a wingspan of around 30 inches. The adult male has striking coloration whereas as in most ducks the female’s coloration is more drab. The range of the Wood ducks is from central North America to the east coast as well the Pacific coast from British Columbia to northern Mexico. Due to overhunting the Wood Ducks was almost exterminated in the late 1800s, but thanks to the passing of laws to protect them the Wood Ducks is the most common waterfowl species breeding in the US. It is the official waterfowl of the state of Mississippi.

Artist’s notes:
The Wood Duck illustration was completed on 2.13.2015. While I had completed a drawing of a pair of Wood Duck many years ago, I had the feeling it wasn’t my strongest effort. Rather than replace the illustration I decided to create a drawing with both a duck and drake (male and female) of the species. Referencing several good photos I created this image of the two ducks in flight.
