Great Dane – Signed Fine Art Print
$19.95 – $27.95
Information about the Great Dane:
The Great Dane, also called the German Mastiff or Danish Hound, is a breed of domestic dog. It is a very well known dog breed, famous for it massive size. The current world record holder, measures 44 inches (112 cm) from paw to shoulder is named “Zeus”. Great Danes were originally bred to hunt deer and wild boar. The Great Dane comes in a wide variety of colors – fawn, brindle, blue, black, harlequin and mantle. Despite it’s large size, the Great Dane is gentle and friendly. They do not exhibit a large prey drive and usually show little or no aggression towards other dogs. The breed originated in Germany, although there were similar looking dogs in ancient Egypt. It is likely a cross between a Mastiff and an Irish Wolf Hound. A French naturalist named Compte de Buffon first saw these impressive dogs while traveling in Denmark in the early 1700’s. The breed was labeled as “le Grande Denois” or Great Dane by the naturalist, although it has no specific connection to the country. For some reason, the name stuck – although only in English.

Artist’s notes:
The Great Dane was completed on 1.29.2012. After attending a dog show at the Cow Palace in San Francisco, I was inspired to draw another canine – and I also needed to add the Great Dane to the library of illustrations for the 50 state project. These dogs are amazing, not only for their great size but impressive ears! I couldn’t decide which variety to draw (solid black, solid white, tan, etc) so I decided on the “Harlequin” pattern, which I find quite appealing.
