The Mangrove Snake - also called the Gold-Ringed Cat Snake - is a species of rear-fanged colubrid. It is one of the biggest of the cat snake species, averaging 6–8 feet (1.8-2.4 m) in length. This snake is native to south-east Asia, from India through to Indonesia and the Philippines. As the name suggests, it is found in mangroves and lowland rainforests near water. Being arboreal (tree dwellers) they spend their days in the branches, coming down at night to hunt, usually looking for small mammals, other reptiles and birds. They are excellent swimmers and are often seen moving though watery areas. It is considered somewhat venomous, but moderate envenomations resulting in intense swelling have been reported, though there has never been a confirmed fatality.
