Ichthyosaur – Signed Fine Art Print
$19.95 – $27.95
Information about the Ichthyosaur:
The Ichthyosaur Shonisaurus is an extinct aquatic dinosaur and member of the family Shonisauridae. They are believed to have lived in the late Triassic period, about 215 million years ago. This fearsome predator is known from about 37 incomplete skeletons that have been found over the years, some of which were found in the Luning Formation in Nevada (of which that state selected the Shonisaurus as the state fossil in 1984.) The species was first found in a large deposit in Nevada in 1920. The Shonisaurus’ name comes from “Lizard from the Shoshone Mountains” where it was first discovered.
The poster is printed on matte, museum-quality paper with Giclée printing quality:
• Paper thickness: 10.3 mil
• Paper weight: 5.6 oz/y² (192 g/m²)
• Opacity: 94%

Artist’s notes:
The Ichthyosaur was completed on 8.27.2012. This is the first aquatic dinosaur I’ve taken a stab at – mostly due to the fact that it’s the stat fossil of Nevada and I need it for the 50 State Project. But having improved my technique since starting out I feel I’m starting to get the hang of rendering these extinct animals. As always, it’s fun to imagine what their skin looked like, as little is known of the exact coloration or patterns. I usually look at what other artists might have done, as well tapping into the knowledge of Carl Buell (my mentor and the man who created the base sketch for this image.) In the end I try and give it my own personal take on the creature.
