The Okapi (Okapia johnstoni) forest giraffe, Congolese giraffe, or zebra giraffe is native to the tropical rainforests of central Africa. While it’s marking resemble that of a zebra, they are not closely related. It is rare in the animal kingdom as it’s one of only two members of the genus Giraffidae (the other naturally being the giraffe.) Because of where the Okapi lives – in dense tropical forest not easily accessible to humans – it wasn’t actually formally identified by Europeans until 1901. The name Okapi means Animal With Long Neck and is of African origin. The Okapi is also called the forest giraffe, Congolese giraffe, or zebra giraffe.
