The Permit Fish is a member of the family Carangidae. It is a game fish native to the warm waters of the western Atlantic Ocean, from Massachusetts in the north, along the coast of the Americas down to Brazil . The name of this fish comes from a Latin adjective that roughly means “armed with scythes.” Adults can reach a maximum of 48 inches (122 cm) weighing up to 80 pounds (36 kg.) They are generally found in shallow waters, usually with muddy bottoms, along channels and in mudflats. They are sometimes seen alone or in small schools. Two submarines in the US Navy have been named “Permit” in honor of this fish.
