Information about the American Redstart:
The American Redstart is a New World warbler. They are migratory birds who winter in Central America and northern South America. The Redstarts are considered a ‘neotropical’ which means they breed north of, and winter south of, the Tropic of Cancer. The bird derives its name from the male’s red tail, start being an old word for tail. The American Redstart is average sized songbird. These birds nest in a low area of a bush or tree, where they lay 2-5 eggs. American Redstarts feed on insects.

Artist’s notes:
The American Redstart illustration was commissioned by Stackpole Books for Laura Erickson’s 101 Ways to Help Birds. The line art version was completed in 2005 and the digital tinting added in 2007. The Redstart is one of those wonderful songbirds I didn’t know about until I was commissioned to draw one.
