Information about the Tadjik Markhor:
The Tadjik Markhor – also called the Bukharan Markhor – is an endangered goat antelope native to the mountainous areas of Tajikistan, Pakistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, perhaps also Afghanistan. Because of the spectacular horns of the males they are much sought after and hunted for them. There are thought to be about 2,500 individuals in the wild in their numbers have been in steep decline for many decades.

Artist’s notes:
The Tadjik Markhor was completed on 12.22.2014. Each week I learn more about the vast number animals that are out there that because of their rarity or remoteness I had never heard of. Such is the case with this impressive ungulate. Finding a great reference photo by the talented photographer Marlo Pineda (who took the photo at the Los Angeles zoo) I created the drawing based on with his permission.
