The Ruffed Grouse is a small, mostly ground-dwelling bird native to the woodlands from the Appalachian Mountains across Canada to Alaska. They are stout, chunky birds and come in two distinct color phases; grey and brown. They usually weigh about a pound to a little over a pound and a half (450-750 grams) with a wingspan of 20-25 inches (50-64 centimeters). The are omnivorous, feeding on various plant matter such as berries, seeds, buds, leaves and insects. They are extremely popular for hunters, and thousands are taken each year during hunting season. The hunters move along in a line in hopes of flushing out the birds, who generally are bedded down in whatever cover they can find. Minnesota is considered the top producing state when considering the Ruffed Grouse. It is the state bird of Pennsylvania. Indian Peafowl - also known as Common Peafowl or Blue Peafowl - is a colorful bird of the Phasianidae family. They are large, with a length from bill to tail of 40 to 46 inches (100 to 115 cm) and to the end of a fully grown train as much as 78 to 90 inches (195 to 225 cm) weighing 8.8-13.2 pounds (4–6 kg.) The female are smaller, more drab and lack the distinctive train of feathers of the males. The Greater Rhea is a threatened member of the order Struthioniformes. It is native to the grasslands, savannahs and grassy open wetlands of eastern South America. It is a large flightless bird, weighing about 50-55 pounds (23-25 kg.) It the largest bird native to South America. It has in recent years established a population in Germany after being introduced there some years ago. The Greater Rhea is omnivorous, feeding on seeds and fruits when available, but will also eat larger insects and invertebrates such as scorpions. It will also eat small lizards and rodents, even other birds on occasion. They are near the top of the food chain and have few predators that feed on them. Cougars, Jaguars will attack adults, and smaller animals will feed on the eggs if the nest is not protected. Due to overhunting the species has declined in some of it's native areas in recent decades. Gentoo Penguin – Signed Fine Art Print
Information about the Gentoo Penguin:
Gentoo penguins are members of the Spheniscidae family. They are large penguins (only the Emperor and King are larger) with a weight of about 19 pounds (8.5 kg) growing to about 20-36 inches tall (51-90 cm) They are the fastest swimmers of the penguins, reaching the impressive speed of about 22 MPH (36 kph) The origin of the name is unclear. Like other penguins, Gentoos feed mostly on crustaceans, such as krill although they will also eat fish. They live in and around islands in the Antarctic region, but their main colony is in the Falkland Islands, where there are about 300,000 breeding pairs. The nests are made on rocky shores. In building a nest Gentoos pile stones, grass and sticks into a circle where the eggs will then be laid. These birds ca be quite aggressive and occasionally fights will break out over stones or other building material, which they will steal from one another.
