The Ruffed Grouse is a small, mostly ground-dwelling bird native to the woodlands from the Appalachian Mountains across Canada to Alaska. They are stout, chunky birds and come in two distinct color phases; grey and brown. They usually weigh about a pound to a little over a pound and a half (450-750 grams) with a wingspan of 20-25 inches (50-64 centimeters). The are omnivorous, feeding on various plant matter such as berries, seeds, buds, leaves and insects. They are extremely popular for hunters, and thousands are taken each year during hunting season. The hunters move along in a line in hopes of flushing out the birds, who generally are bedded down in whatever cover they can find. The Greater Rhea is a threatened member of the order Struthioniformes. It is native to the grasslands, savannahs and grassy open wetlands of eastern South America. Gentoo penguins are members of the Spheniscidae family. They are large penguins (only the Emperor and King are larger) with a weight of about 19 pounds (8.5 kg) growing to about 20-36 inches tall (51-90 cm) They are the fastest swimmers of the penguins, reaching the impressive speed of about 22 MPH (36 kph) The origin of the name is unclear. Like other penguins, Gentoos feed mostly on crustaceans, such as krill although they will also eat fish. They live in and around islands in the Antarctic region, but their main colony is in the Falkland Islands, where there are about 300,000 breeding pairs. The nests are made on rocky shores. In building a nest Gentoos pile stones, grass and sticks into a circle where the eggs will then be laid.
