Information about the Black Grouper:
The Black Grouper – also called the black rockfish, bonaeci arara, and marbled rockfish – is a large member of the family Serranidae which are the sea basses and groupers. They can grow to be about 60 inches long (150 cm) and weigh 220 pounds (100 kg) They are generally found in and around rocky coral reefs, although they can occasionally venture out into the open ocean. The Black Grouper can be found in the western Atlantic Ocean, from Massachusetts, USA, in the north to southern Brazil, but is particularly associated with the southern Gulf of Mexico, the Florida Keys, the Bahamas and the Caribbean. Due to overfishing the species is close to becoming endangered.

Artist’s notes:
The Black Grouper was completed on 12.13.2014. The large fish of the ocean have always held a great fascination with them. I recall sitting on the pier in Santa Barbara as a kid hoping to catch a glimpse of some massive leviathan lurking below the surface. This is the sixth grouper I’ve drawn and it will be part of two collages I’m designing: one of the marine life of the Caribbean, the other a collection of some of the world’s grouper species. The drawing is based on a photo by Mark Harris and was used with his permission.
