Information about the California Whipsnake:
The California Whipsnake – also called the Striped Racer – is a colubrid snake found in a wide range of habitat types including open desert, oak woodland, pine forest, chaparral, and associated open landscapes.
This species is represented by two subspecies: the chaparral whipsnake (M. l. lateralis) and the Alameda whipsnake. These slender snake usually feed on a variety of prey including insects, lizards, snakes, birds, and small mammals, although they tend to favor lizards, which they will grab with their mouths and swallow it whole. This species commonly moves over and through brush and trees in order to avoid predation and to capture prey. The subspecies M. l. euryxanthus is considered threatened by the state of California.

Artist’s notes:
The California Whipsnake was completed on 5.23.2013. I’ve developed some techniques which make getting the scales of a snake – once the bane of my existence each time I picked up a pen to draw one – that makes it much, much easier to get them looking right.
Although with a dark-colored snake like this, it is a little easier to hide inaccuracies in the snake’s anatomy, it is very important to me to make sure the drawing makes sense to the viewer’s eye. The illustration is based on a photo by Jason Butler.
