Costa Rican Variable Harlequin Toad – Signed Fine Art Print
$19.95 – $27.95
Information about the Costa Rican Variable Harlequin Toad:
The Costa Rican Variable Harlequin Toad – also called the Clown Frog – is a critically endangered neo-tropical true toad from the family Bufonidae. This colorful toad was once found from Costa Rica to Panama, it now exists only in one location, near Quepos, Costa Rica. It is presumed to be extinct in Panama. The reason for it’s decline is likely a combination of of variation in air temperature, precipitation, stream flow patterns, and the subsequent spread of a pathogenic chytrid fungus (Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis) thought to be linked to climate change. At one time A. zeteki (Panamanian Golden Frog ) was considered a subspecies of A. varius, but is now generally considered a separate species. This frog in the past was found on rocks and crevices alongside streams as well as humid lowland and montane forests. It rarely enters the water, except to breed. Unless there is some change in conditions for this toad, it will likely go extinct in the wild very soon.

Artist’s notes:
The Costa Rican Variable Harlequin Toad was completed on 6.15.2013. I was contacted by Craig Hassapakis, who is co-editor of Amphibian & Reptile Conservation. They wanted to redesign their logo, and asked if I would consider drawing this frog for it. As I have an affinity for tropical frogs I was happy to oblige and render the above drawing. When the logo is finished I will post a link to it here.
