American Wigeon – Signed Fine Art Print
$19.95 – $27.95
Information about the American Wigeon:
The American Wigeon is a medium-sized bird usually growing to about 17-23 inches long (59 cm) with a 30–36 inch (76–91 cm) wingspan and weighing 1.13–2.9 pounds (512–1,330 grams). This bird is quite noisy and in the field can often be identified by it’s very distinctive calls. The males produce a three note whistle, while the females emit hoarse grunts and quacks. The American Wigeon is a bird of open wetlands, such as wet grassland or marshes with some taller vegetation, and usually feeds by dabbling for plant food or grazing, which it does very readily. It is common and widespread, breeding in all but the extreme north of Canada and Alaska and also in the Interior West through Idaho, Colorado, the Dakotas, and Minnesota, as well as eastern Washington and Oregon. The majority of the population breeds on wetlands in the Boreal Forest and subartic river deltas of Canada and Alaska. This dabbling duck is migratory and winters farther south than its breeding range, in the southern half of the United States, Idaho, Washington, Oregon, and the Mid-Atlantic coastal region, and further south into Central America and northwestern South America.

Artist’s notes:
The American Wigeon was completed on 6.29.2013. I love all the different species of duck, and the American Wigeon was one of the most lovely of the more commonly encountered waterfowl. I found a great reference photo by my Flickr friend Don Delaney and I created this drawing based on that image.
