Information about the Channel Catfish:
The Channel Catfish is a large, freshwater catfish native to the streams, rivers, lakes and ponds of North America. It is extremely popular with anglers and an estimated eight million people fish for these animals in an average year (using various techniques such as “noodling” wherein the angler actually gets into the water using their hands as bait and grabbing the catfish by the mouth, trying to find them in their muddy crevices.) The species has been deliberately introduced into parts of Asia. The Channel Catfish is omnivorous and will eat nearly anything that it can digest. It is the state fish of Missouri, (unofficial) Iowa, Nebraska, and one of two in Tennessee (the other being the Largemouth Bass

Artist’s notes:
The Channel Catfish was completed on 6.12.2012. Growing up in Minnesota it was pretty common to encounter these fish (although we more commonly called them “bullheads.” This isn’t normally a fish that would compel me to draw one. But as it is the official fish of several states, I had to render one to help complete the 50 State Project . I based the drawing by looking at several examples of mounted fish, so I don’t really know if this pose is realistic or not, but it seemed to be pretty common for taxidermists to mount these fish in this manner.
